The Therapeutic Value Of Bridge
Happy Thanksgiving!
by Bill McManus

Your Aces are many, your spade suit long
King and Queens aplenty, you sing the slam song

Partner is not shy, but very inviting
you tell a little lie, 7 spades is exciting

An Opponent with a smile, snaps down his double
You worry awhile, suspecting big trouble

Did we miscalculate, you wonder in vain?
REDOUBLE is our fate, is partner insane?

A "little lie" told, in bidding a hand
causes events to unfold, that are not always grand.

But is Thanksgiving about "We",  7 Spades, double, redouble to play
Made would be twenty-nine forty, but is that the Thanksgiving way?

No, down six would be right, the "little lie" was the key
Having the power and might, to turn you into a turkey!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

BRIDGE IN A NUTSHELL

By Hildegard Rolland, Hi-Riser Columnist

With 14 or more points, I'm required to speak,
And mention a suit that is not very weak.

With five cards or longer, I need not be cute,
I merely will open with one of that suit.

But with a four card major, ah- there's the rub,
I know I must open, so I'll just say one Club (or one Diamond)

With 15-17, One No Trump will do,
And with 21 or more, in Clubs I'll open with two.

When the opponents have opened, my back's to the wall;
I have good points and length, so I must overcall.

My partner has opened, and I'm in a fix,
Because I must pass with less points than six.

But if my count is six, point to ten,
I must respond once, but need not again.

Now 11-12 points is pretty nice,
I plan to respond, not once, but twice.

With 13 or more points, I would be to blame,
If I let the bid end before we reach game.
